Diggs School #42

Elder Watson Diggs was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College and Indiana University, birthplace of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  He was considered the "Dreamer" and principal founder of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for his many contributions during the eDiggsarly development years.  An educator by trade, he was a teacher and principal in the Indianapolis Public Schools.

After Diggs' death on November 8, 1947, the name of the school where he taught was changed to Elder Diggs School in his memory.

The Indianapolis Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has been a strong supporter of Elder Diggs School #42 for many years.  During the fraternity’s 75th anniversary, held in Indianapolis, a new Diggs school building was built and visiting fraternity members were given a tour of the school.  Also, in 2011, during the fraternity's Centennial anniversary, Grand Chapter officers, lead by Grand Polemarch Randall Bates, dedicated a statue of Elder Watson Diggs, new playground equipment, a computer room and computers for students at the school.

Currently, more than 15 members of the Indianapolis Alumni donate their time to assist in improving student academics at Diggs School.  The initiatives are:

Academic Tutoring:  work weekly on reading and comprehension skills with boys and girls in grades 3-6.  Students meet in small groups and read articles.  Kappa men lead them in discussions on content and help them to explain, in their own words, details of the article.

Mentoring:  A group of 12 boys in grades 5 and 6 are provided lessons;/discussions on character development traits.  Discussions are on topics such as goal-setting, self discipline, anger management and conflict resolution.

Enrichment:  Diggs School created enrichment programs to encourage achievement and excellence in the school.  Examples of programs include:

  • Diggs Achievers Awards
  • Honors Breakfast
  • Kappa Lunch Club
  • Recognition for all students with good behavior
  • Appreciation Day for Teachers and Students
  • Kappa sponsored Christmas with Santa
